Flush the wounds repeatedly with clean water or soap water after being exposed/ bitten by a rabid animal.
Risk groups:
People who are at a risk of coming in contact with the rabies virus are veterinarians, animal trainers, animal breeders, pet salon workers, forestry workers, slaughterhouse workers, campers, staff in rabies laboratories etc.
Transmission:
It is to be noted that any mammal can get rabies and the most common reservoirs for rabies are dogs, cats, bats, cattle, foxes, raccoons, skunks etc.
Usually people get rabies from the bite of a rabid animal. Also, a possibility exists to get rabies from non-bite exposures which can include scratches, abrasions, or open wounds that are exposed to saliva or other potentially infectious material from a rabid animal.
Rabies virus is transmitted through direct contact with saliva or brain/nervous system tissue from an infected animal through broken skin (cuts, wounds) or mucous membranes in the eyes, nose, or mouth of an individual.
Step 1; Reconstitute the vaccine with enclosed sterile water for injection and thoroughly shake it before use.
Step 2; Inject intramuscularly in the deltoid muscle of upper arm. In children, inject the vaccine at anteroexternal side of the thigh.
1ml of reconstituted OLVAXTAR-RAB vaccine has a potency of ≥ 2.5 IU.
